Joshua your spacer package doesn't bother my eye. This has been a good exercise. I find a good portion of my mistakes looking at in progress photos.
You don't like spacer sizing?. Different thickness.

Have you tried partially closing off the front and back with fire bricks? You'll have to experiment and re-tune your burner.
