Hi folks- <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Since Angi and I bought our new house and have a big, new shop to go along with it--- I've kind of been itching to do a another work in progress.

Now most of the time, I feel like I only know enough to be dangerous... But I usually manage to fumble my way to a completed knife every now and again.

Between my Engineering background, and a Dad that always said, "Damn it, if you're gonna bother doing it, DO IT RIGHT!!!" I am constantly working to come up with consistent and repeatable methods to how I do things. Many of which can be directly attributed to many of the fine folks on this board!!! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Anyway, now that I got stuff out of the way---

Is there anything you guys would really like to see as a work in progress?

Thanks guys!!! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//cool.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' /> <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Have you done one with your method of forging yet?

Nick,

I was thinking it's about time for you to test for MS. Not that you want to do a WIP on a test knife but you might try a handle construction that, perhaps, you've never done. I have seen your work and know that you are ready skill wise, but you might need a project to convince yourself. Think about it. Lin

Thank you for your generous offer. I know that a Work In Progress (WIP) is a lot of work but it is an excellent teaching method to show the steps and techniques used to make a specific style knife.

I would love to see a thread on setting an escutcheon plate. Also how to make a spanish notch, design etc.

Nick, I have to go along with Lin. Something that will stretch you a bit and to tell yourself that you can do this. We know that your knives are there. Maybe a frame handle of some type or a fluted handle with wire like you would do on a dagger. Go get em and I look forward to seeing the WIP.

Nick,

I'm with Brion on this one. I'd love to see a take down frame hande WIP Wheeler style. Perhaps even a dagger ???

Whatever you decide to do I'll be anxiously waiting for it.

Well shoot, I meant to post this thread in the Apprentice Corner. I figured I might be able to help a guy or two over there. I didn't mean to put this idea in front of the whole board <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> It feels like a grade school kid walking into a room full of college professors and asking if they'd like to get some learn'n! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//ohmy.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//huh.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Sorry about that! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//sad.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

On the other side of the coin, I sincerely appreciate the kind words of encouragement!!! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> That means the world to me. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

And those are great ideas! I actually have done quite a few framed handles and wire wrapped handles, but they were quite some time ago and would definitely not be up to my current standards and surely not Ms level work! So I suppose it is about time. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

***** I should have prefaced the original post by saying that I have some orders to finish and some more work on the shop to finish before I should take on a WIP... but I would really like to do another one and thought getting some ideas now would give me a chance to try to think one through before getting started.

Thanks guys!!! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Nic -- Shoot brah (that's bro in "Hawaiian"), whatever you do will be GREAT for us lesser mortals (speaking strictly for myself). To start with, how about a list of links to WIP threads you already did? Not that it matters, but agree with the Lin and Brion, go for the MS dude...you're already there skill wise for sure!!! And, you're a GREAT representative of the forged blade, bladesmithing and just plain old having fun doing this stuff. You might as well add the MS to you knives. That'd be worth more to your patrons and collectors, which would likely translate to more inflow for your family budget...that would be fun too! -- Aloha, Phil

I'd love to see one as some already mentioned-fluted wire wrapped handle. That one's always made me wonder.... Thanks for being willing to share your process, whatever you choose to do.

Let's kill two birds with one stone... How about putting the fluted, wire-wrapped handle on a damascus quillon dagger?

This way we get one of your signature WIP's and at the same time you get nudged toward your MS rating that you should be going after. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//biggrin.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

HaHa guys... <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I was thinking of something that I'd be a little less stressed out about while building ! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Hey Nick stress is good for you, <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//laugh.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> . Seriously, A WIP on a damascus bowie or fighter going through the whole process would appeal to a whole bunch of people. Maybe with a damascus guard also.
