This isn't a knife, but I spent way more time and knowledge earning experience on this than I thought I would. I am pretty proud of this. However as I was driving the steel wedge, the handle cracked. So still work in progress. any advice on how to not split my handle would be appreciated.
Respectfully
Michael
The part of the handle that fits into the head should not be loose. It should taper and get wider closer to the handle. The last little bit is set by whacking the butt end of the handle and driving it into the head while the head is in free air. The wedge is there to just fill the last split and it doesn't take a lot of beating to get it in there. Just put some glue in the split and tap it in until it stops. Cut off the excess. I hope that makes sense.
This woman does a really good job replacing axe handles. She also has some great IG videos. The concept is the same with a hammer. https://youtu.be/MegJub0hOmc?si=3BsSnyhjH9ti6FzH
