Today when I got home from my treatment, FedX had delivered a brand new motor for my latest grinder build. I decided to go with a 3hp and a KBAC 29D controller. Stumbled around the net for a while, and found these two outfits......

http://www.ptjindustrial.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=116107

$249 and free shipping for a Leeson 3HP TEFC motor! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I'm on it!!!

Looks like they carry a lot of differnt HP ratings in Leeson motors....and they are all very fairly priced!

Found the Controller here:

http://www.electricmotorwholesale.com/10001-KBAC-29D/

The gentleman I spoke with was super knowledgable, and easy to talk to. I learned a lot during our conversation....I had planned to purchase a 3450rpm motor to avoid having to "double speed" it on the controller. He quickly put the brakes on that plan by telling me that if I went with a 3450 motor, the torque would be cut in half with a VFD! The problem I was having with the low speed motors was some government regulation that specifies shaft size on specific HP size motors.....seems the motor listed above is an exemption to that rule! To explain, most motors of 3 hp come with a 1 1/8" shaft due to the above mentioned regulations.....so that means most of the availalbe drive wheels simply won't fit....but this one has a 5/8" shaft.......so Rob Frink got some more business from me. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//rolleyes.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Anyway, Here's a couple of pics:

Ed

Glad to see that you are back home!

That looks like a very powerful grinder that are building. I am looking forward to seeing it as you progress in the build.

Hi Dan!

I had to spend another 5 hours sitting in a chair today, with a needle stuck in my arm....darn good thing I stuck it out and retired from the Air Force! This stuff they are giving me (rituximab) is $10K per treatment! Today when the IV bag was down to just a little bit left, the nurse came over an said "Your about done." To which I replied "Yep, there's only about $3,000 worth left!" <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Hopefully this stuff will kick these lung issue in the behind, and I can become "the old me" again. I hate this not feeling good enough to be in the shop!

Hey Ed, that's a pretty phenomenal find on that Leeson motor. I've got a 3hp 56c (5/8" shaft) Baldor motor that I lucked into at the scrap yard I run my Wilmont TAG grinder with, using a KBAC 29 also, but it's been one of the only motor's I've seen in 3hp with a 56C format frame.

There are actually quite a few 3hp C-face TEFC motors in 143/145TC with 7/8" shafts, but nobody makes drive wheels to fit them that I'm aware of.. As you said, though, most are in the 182TC or 184TC frame, with 1 1/8" shafts.

The site you listed for the VFDs is the best I'm aware of also, and I know a few grinder makers buy from them, because they can't get them cheaper directly.

You're going to love the 3hp motor with the KBAC 29, it's a big step up from 2hp.

Those are excellent prices for the controllers, Ed.

I have bought from http://motorsandcontrol.com/products/kb-controls/ac-drives-nema-4x.html in the past have they have been excellent to deal with. They have the switches, like forward/reverse and on/off, listed with the controllers.
