Hi Fellas,

Does anyone have any pictures of broaches made from reciprocating saw blades? I have heard of these being pretty good for hogging out hidden tang handles and I know that Scott Maghee and Jason Knight use them. However, I have never seen one and have been unable to procure a picture or diagram of them. I would like to try and make a few as I am getting ready for the June Handles & guards class at Haywood. Any help greatly appreciated.

Brad,

I have one made by Jason that I won in an ABS auction. Works great. I am out of town but, will be back either tomorrow or Sunday. I will photograph it and post the photo for you. It works great. The one I got was 3 blades taped together. I retaped it into 2 broaches, one with 2 blades and one with a single blade. I use them to hog out the webbing between my holes and to square up the the final fit. I have made a couple more and given them to a few friends.

Brad, here are the photos. I have in my unpacked tools from Feb the newer ones I made. They are longer. My other ones have about a 6" blade length and are narrower, these are about 4" in blade length. Both sets get the job done. One is just about 1/8' thick, the other about 3/16' (2 blades taped together).

Hopes this helps.

I'm trying to make the June class also. If all works out I'll see you there.

George,

Thanks for posting the pictures. Appears I was expecting something a bit more complicated. When I was young, (a long time ago), I made lock picks ground out of hacksaw blades. This looks no harder, just grind slowly and don't overheat the blade stock. I guess if I want to stack them for a wider kerf, I should grind several to the same profile. I will experiment.

Brad,

A friend of mine is coming over this weekend and we are going to try and make a couple of nicer ones. I will let you know how it goes. The saw blade ones are fairly easy to do. I have made them for some of my friends. I will tell you the ones I tried make from HF Chinese blades over heated very fast. I got good blades from Ace hardware in my neck of the woods, they let you remove the needed stock and I dip them every two passes to cool them. The HF ones over heated in one pass and you could see the color change.

Brad,

We cut out a couple broaches but, they did not work as planned. We will be trying again. When we get one that works as good as saw blade or better I will let you know.

Brad,

We got it. My friend Fred is a tool maker and machinist. He made them and I finished the handles. 2 sizes ti make working with them easier.

I told him he should get into the business of tools for bladesmith... LOL

I will take them to the H&G class when I go. Praying for it soon.
