Hello Matthew. I use my disc grinder a lot more than the Foredom

Matthew, a good variable speed dremel will do some of the things a foredom can. You can even get a flex shaft for them. I would go for the disc grinder. They come in real handy.

Matthew,

The disc will get the ricasso and blade flat, and reduces the hand sanding greatly. Flatten your guard stock for better fit ups. Get a variable speed, reversable disc. You will be glad.

In all my years of Bladesmithing, I've never been able to justify a Foredom. I always buy tools based on how much use I will get out of them, and how much return I think I will get on my investment. I feel I get far more bang for my buck with the disc grinder then I ever would with a foredom.

Well I just got my Beaumont Disk Grinder in with the tool rest. What do you guys suggest for sand paper. Was looking at Pops' store and he has several ones. What do you guys usually use?

I use Aluminum Oxide for grits 60 through 220. Silicon Carbide for grits 320 and higher.

I use more 220 and 320 than anything else. I use the disc for finishing both blades and handles.

I also bought the Nielsen Magnetic Chuck disc system, and highly recommend it to anyone who finds themselves wanting to change discs often enough. As time goes on, you may find you want one.

I purchased two flat discs, one I covered with 3/16" rubber (35 durometer) and the 1 degree beveled disc. The modified flat disc comes in handy for very specific grinding operations (folders, sculpted guards, etc.)
