Modifying Hammer

I still struggle getting my plunge cuts to be smooth and uniform. I know this due to my inaccuracy with a hammer but there has to be a way to modify the hammer to help with this chore. Any advice?

Look up smithing magician ,also known as a gullitine tool. You can make a simple die set that will put very even plunges in.
