Thanks I could not figure it out even after going and looking at the tutorial several different times. This hammer was a fun project if anyone has any questions about it I will be happy to answer them.

Do you think I will be able to make good welds with this machine?

Hi Jared,

Looking good!! It looks like it has the potential to get some decent work done. You're not going to get everything out of it and find out until you get it mounted to a solid base.

One thing that I think you are going to start wishing for is interchangeable dies. The sledge hammer faces will do a lot of work, but you have no directional control of the material. Top and bottom mounts with different dies that you can bolt in would make this a sweet machine. Might as well start figuring out how you're going to do that!! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//biggrin.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Yea Steve

You're right about that. I thought about that as I welded that on. Eventually I will be doing that. I had hammer fever and didn't want to wait. I've still got some tuning issues I will have to get done before I can do that.

I suppose I could dress the hammer faces like I have done on some of my hand hammers.

Hey guy's

I used the hammer for the first time today on hot steel...wow there is a learning curve with running a mechanical hammer. I did have to reshape the anvil to do some drawing with. The metal just didn't seem to be going anywhere until I did that. I worked on a railroad spike because I didn't want to mess up good steel. I did mess up my railroad spike pretty bad. I was trying to make a lilly flower. Did not go so good. ...

Could someone post a vid or some tips on using a power hammer for making a blade.

Jared

Now that is a great idea! We could really use a video for our ABS YouTube Channel on the proper use of and techniques for using a power hammer to forge a blade.

Jared:

You asked for a video about how to use a power hammer to forge a blade so I listened and located one. This is one that I just edited and uploaded tonight to the ABS YouTube Channel. The demonstrator is Master Smith JR Cook so you are seeing one of the best at work.

Thanks for that video. It helped alot to see how he spaced out his blade length with that extra pair of tongs.
