I wanted to start a discussion to hear everyone's opinion on either buying or making a propane forge and the advantages/disadvantages of each. If you suggest buying a forge, where from? Thanks

I prefer to build , mostly because i don't like any of the forges on the market. they are not all that hard to make, the burner is the hardest part. the book Burners for Forges and Kilns by Michael Porter is a good place to start. centaur forge had it for a reasonable price last i looked.

I agree with Matthew..... build. With a little thought and effort, you can build a forge that is FAR better at it's job then anything currently available in a "ready made" format. If you're learning how to build a forge, DON'T rely on the internet for your information (ie: Youtube)....there is so much bunk out there on forges and building them it's staggering.

Of course there are going to different opinions, even among experienced Bladesmiths, but if you ask folks here, you'll be able to spot commonalities that will point the way.

Resist the urge to "overbuild" a forge.... that means don't fall into the trap of over complicating things, especially burners. When use the term KISS...... it means "Keep it Simple...
