I am looking for a 9" disc grinder with flat or beveled disk but I don't want to spend the money for a new one. I figure I could build one for about 550 dollars but first wanted to see if anyone had a used one in good condition that they would like to sell for under 500 dollars? <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I realize that's probably kinda cheap for a Disc grinder so I understand if it doesn't work out.
Thanks,
Wesley

Wesley just a thought ,
a couple years back I bought (2) used enclosed 1750 rpm motors for $30 each , then bought (2) forward and reverse switches off the buy and sell for $20 each , and finally (1) beveled
and (1) flat disc from Beaumont, all in about $250 for two !!
good luck !!

Thanks for the ideas Mr. Watson, I'll keep them in mind. I would like to have a VFD on it so that brings the price up pretty quick.
I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to building these things so I'm not sure what all the options are.
Wesley
I just thought of something. Is it possible to run more than one tool off the same VFD?
because I already have a KBAC 27D for my belt grinder.
Wesley
Google Wayne Coe blacksmith. I bought all my components from him.
Bob
Thanks. When I built my 2x72 grinder I bought the motor and VFD from him. Might have to buy from him again.
Wes
Just put a switch on you vfd so you can either run the motor on the belt or the motor on the disc..if they are the same type of motor it won't be an issue.
Another guy on this forum figured out how to run a belt and a disc off of the same motor:
Couple good options and not too spendy. Good luck!
Thanks Mr. Morley. If I could just hook another 1 1/2 HP motor to my existing VFD that would be great! can someone tell me what type of switch, where to get it, and how to hook it up? Running a disk off the same shaft would be nice except my grinder is direct drive. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//sad.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />
Thanks,
Wes
I run both my surface grinder and my disc grinder on the same VFD.
I just made a short female pigtail coming off the VFD and just plug in which ever machine I want to run.

Wesley- there are actually quite a few threads out there about wiring up multiple motors on one VFD... lots of guys smarter than me giving details. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
Here's the switch I used.

I actually used 2 of them so that I could split off to two other motors. I have the KBAC-27 running one of my KMGs and two disc grinders.
It's all within easy reach to flip the switches, and didn't cost much! I got one of my disc grinder motors off the bay for $55, and the other (a brand new Baldor 2hp) for $140 delivered. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//cool.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

Thanks Nick, I'll look into that.
Wesley
Wesley- Hope that didn't come across like blowing you off about the wiring! I know enough to do it, but I don't know enough/don't feel qualified to give advice on doing it.
It is safe to say that if I figured it out, anyone can get it done! <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//biggrin.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

No problem Nick. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />
I do have a question for you though, Do you use flat and beveled disks?
Also, where do you buy them?
BTW, I really like watching your videos, Very informative.
Wes
Hey Wes- <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
I actually have both. I think if a guy were to have just one, he may as well stick with a flat disc. The beveled one is nice for doing big bowies and such, because it guarantees to keep your long blade off of the "uphill" side of the disc... But it isn't a necessity.
Some folks, IMHO, over think the tapered discs and want to argue about them "grinding a reverse cone." But for that to happen, you would have to keep whatever you're grinding in the exact same position with NO movement. The "cone" of a tapered disc is very, very small.
I got my discs from Nathan Carothers, but I'm pretty sure he's all sold out and won't be making more. I have heard a lot of good things about the Nielsen interchangeable disc set-up. While I don't have first-hand experience with it, some folks I trust do, and they highly recommend it. So I think that would be a solid choice.
