I love it when I get an order for a knife and have just a few suggestions and a budget, so I'm free to make the knife however I like within boundaries. This one was an order like that. Ended up with a forged W2 hunter with a hamon, plum browned mild steel fittings with a few stainless accents, and a mortised sheep horn coffin handle. I think Robert will be pleased with it. It'll get a chance to visit Caleb Royer for some glamour shots as well.
Real question for this forum...Based on my understanding of the JS test knife requirements, this knife would not be submitted because of the etched blade finish, but the browned fittings are OK since I did the work myself. Is this correct?
I really like this one Jason. All of the materials an colors go so well together. The handle shape and geometry looks really good in the picture.
Good looking knife Jason. The browned fittings are fine, basically the same as blued fittings. The etched blade however is too heavily etched. A light etch and then polishing to bring out the hamon will work, just not a heavy etch.

Thanks, Brion, that's what I was thinking. This particular knife I wanted all dark, muted, subtle, but that's not what JS knives are designed to be.
Exactly what I did.
I did a W2 blade and etched the hamon. Then I did a hand rubbed finish that highlighted the differential hardening resulting from the etched hamon.
It sort of killed two birds with one stone.

You can do it, too!
I think the resize took me 90 seconds.
