Karl B Andersen I have no science other than imperial testing, but I find I get darker blacks without the coffee, it also seems to eat the oxidation off of the copper better.
I used it on these knives and loved the contrast. I do 3 min soaks and light sanding with 1000 => 2500 between soaks usually takes about 10 repeats as I move up the grits.
