I do very few custom orders these days but a good friend asked me to make one for his collection and I felt quite honored to be asked.
His collection is a little unique in that he asks that all the knives have the same blade size & profile as well as for all to have an ironwood handle. From there he lets the maker do his own thing. For this one, I decided to blend a little old & new. I used some W1 rod for the blade and extended the false edge back past the clip as I felt that it matched the handle design a little better. From there I gave it a ball-tipped guard, coffin handle w/inlayed escutcheons, domed pins and a pommel wrap.
The customer hasn't seen the knife yet and I hope that he likes the design as it is a little different than his previous collection knives.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Gary

Looks nice, Gary! Is this a full hardened blade without hamon?
Very nice Gary!! I'm sure your friend will love it!
Thanks, everyone. I appreciate it.
Christophe--The blade is fully hardened. There is some pearlite in it but not intentional.

Great work Gary, If he doesn't like it I can give you my address so you will know where to mail it.
That's nice Gary. I want to make another straight ball end guard soon. I have some stag that would go well with that style. Good work my friend.
Thanks Lin & Jared.
Lin--I did something on this one that made making the guard a little easier. Rather than making it from bar stock as I have in the past, I started with round rod & turned the ball ends on a lathe and then forged the middle. It saved a lot of time & effort. This may be how everyone does it but it took me until now to figure that out. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//biggrin.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />
Glad that you guys liked it. The owner picked it up today and was well pleased so I'm happy.

Thanks, Dan. I'm not sure why I hesitated on forging 416 for so long as it forges easily.
