I have been working on this CuMai Kopis (Medusa's Revenge) and needed a kiln to heat treat it.  I really do try and live by the philosophy "Need a tool, make a tool". For those interested, you can save a lot of money.  my total build cost is $960CAD (about 48 cents USD). To buy this in Canada would be at least a $5k touch.

you can follow along on the kiln build here if you are interested. Kiln Build Pt 1

The Kopis build videos are here Medusa's Revenge Pt 1

Wendell Bryenton,

I am so impressed that you made that. Holy cow. Honestly I bought the Paragon Kiln, and it was close to 4k once you include shipping and the extras that we ordered with it. I will not say that I am not regretting my choice, but I know that "One-Day" I have such a desire to make a sword. So I know I will use this instruction video to make a longer HT kiln for bigger projects, Thank you!

Respectfully
Michael

Thanks, I’m going to make a few changes to it in the next couple of weeks.  My cost so far is $960CAD ($700USD). For me to buy a kiln was touching $5.5 delivered so there is significant savings.  Not as pretty, but it wouldn’t be too hard to add on a couple rows of bricks if I did need something longer.

I want to add a 2nd SSR to make it safer and the lights I bought were junk, they burned out in a couple of hours even though they were rated for the voltage and current.  I guess you get what you pay for.  Still working out the best way to add a handle and lock.  Although the friction fit at the moment is providing a solid seal

The thing I am really happy with is that the skin temperature at 1600 was still only 120 degrees.  Warm, but not dangerously.  My wife’s pottery kiln gets closer to 300 skin temperature.
