As a bladesmith, the word "scrap"doesn't exist in my vocabulary. So when some time ago I found a little piece of HVG (O1) steel laying on the shelf, I decided to exercise some hammer control. The piece was 30/15/50mm and I managed to forge a ~150/40/6mm blade. The spine is 6mm thick at the handle and is forged with distal taper.

After HT (~58 HRc) the blade was left on the shelf to wait and a few days ago it was the right time to mak a knife out of it. The guard is brass and at first I chose white ebony for the handle. Than I decided it is too simple to put only one piece of wood for the handle (and I had some pieces of camel bone and buffalo horh laying in the dwarer), so I added some spacers. Tried to round the edges of the bone and horn to make it easier to feel them in the hand and went too far, but it is not a problem, because they are really smooth.

The sheath is 4mm calf blank leather with some tooling. I had some other plans for it, but one day I had a clla with a customer demanding a knife for a burthday present. And it had to be ready in 2-3 hours. So "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED" and in a couple of hours I managed to make a pretty decent sheath.

All critique welcome.

That is a great example of doing a lot with a little piece of steel.

“So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. I've been there before.”

Thanks guys! Really appreciate it!

This is a text book example how to sell scrap at really high price! All the materials were about to go to the bin - the steel was a leftover from another project, the ebony had some voids near the guard, the big camel bone piece cracked lengthwise. Only the buffalo horn and the brass were OK. As I said a few days ago to a friend - "It is really easy to make a knife. People like me make it look hard to normal people, so that we can easily take normap people's money."  🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 Sometimes I am really smart and funny! 🤣
