Let me know what you think. This is one of the first ones I forged. I traded it for an anvil that I never got. A lesson learned in that one. Making this knife I hot cut one of the ears off of a plow blade. I used a mustard patina so it is kinda hard to see the finish. The guard is mild steel and the handle is leather, mesquite wood and deer antler. I haven't made any knives this large since. What about the blade shape?

I like it. Sort of has like a Native American/Japanese feel to it. I like the mustard patina, looks almost Damascus. Sucks you didn't get your anvil. Keep at it that knife looks good. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thanks Jason,

Now after going to my first hammer in the handle and the blade were too thick. If you haven't been to one I highly recomend it. There is a lot of good info to be had. Thanks to all the instructors at Johnny Stouts shop this weekend was great. Imagine getting to meet all your knife heroes all in one weekend.

I really like the shape of the blade and the thickness of the guard. Where did you get the mesquite for the handle? On the 2nd picture, is that a pin through the antler portion of the handle or a spot reflection from the camera?

Thanks. Yes it is a pin through the antler. I have mesquite on my property, lots of it. The guard was just a piece of mild steel strap. I also use mesquite to forge with instead of gas. It takes longer but it is free. I will switch to gas someday soon. I am working on another knife now that should show a little progression in my skill. When I started this "hobby" I thought it would be a cheap one. LOL now I am looking at all kinds of stuff that I think I gotta have.

Free is always good. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
