Here's a bowie I'm planning on bringing to Blade. This is just a really nice size, I think.
Specs:
Hand forged from 1095 steel, 'No-Clay' polished hamon
13 1/4" overall, 8 1/2" blade, .200" at the ricasso w/ full distal taper
Clip is *just* shy of sharp
Heavily rounded spine and ricasso
Fluted damascus guard and damascus collar
Coined copper spacers
Stabilized Koa handle
Damascus bolt cover
All comments and discussion welcome.
Here I'm trying to show the hamon. It's not as boring as it seems at first glance. All kinds of little strictures in the main transition line. You can also barely see all the banding above the main line. I really have trouble capturing the detail in these polished blades.
That is so clean. I really like your work John.
Really nice, John. Someone's going to like that on your table <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />.

Great look John and super clean! I look forward to seeing it at Blade. I will see you at the CKCA banquet I guess.

Quick question, as your Bowie is a perfect example. I'm working on a Bowie myself, Michael Rader gave me homework on it. Wants me to square up the section of ricasso between the blade and tang (where your makers mark is etched) what is the best way to do this. He
Wants it parallel and same thickness all around within ~.005" I've taken it to my 2x72 flat platen but as you all know the belt grinds more aggressive on the section facing up. I keep swapping it back and forth as to keep it even, but not working the best any suggestions?
This section in question.
Nevermind I figured out a way to freehand grind it.
