Here is the first of a set of Tantos for a Graduation present from father to son. 6" 340 layer CuMai over 1084 with Iron wood and micarta handles. They had me do a custom pin to signify their faith as a center piece to the handle. On the handle is a "glass breaker" point to be used in rescue work.

And got the 2nd one done. This was by far the hardest build I have done. Not because the knife was particularly difficult, but because I had to make 2 identical knives. Lots of intimate time spent with the calipers on this one.

Michael Samdahl that was one of the hardest parts. First time doing Tanto's and matching blades. Double whammy. Very slowly, prayer and curses, the normal promises of first child, celibacy, almost had to promise to quit drinking scotch....
I drew the lines out and only did about ½ with the grinder, the rest was hand filing/sanding. Next time, now that I understand the angles better, I will go a lot closer to finish, but will still probably bring it up to final with hand sanding. (I hate Tantos because of that clean break line)

No, I just used the 2x72 to get close but still a ways away. Then used a file jig. I did measure the distance between the edge and pivot point for both the long part of the blade and then rotated the blade so the tip was perpendicular at the same distance. That way the Line from the transition goes straight from the transition. I then did sanding with 80 grit by hand using the jig to get to finished shape. Took longer than it should have, but it was my first shot at a Tanto, and was learning the geometry as well.
After the 80 grit on the jig, I transitioned to free hand sanding up through the grits.
I did curse lots at how long it was taking me though...
