Thanks for the coments.
The guard is hand carved with a GRS graver. It's my first deep relif engraving.
I did the sheaf too.
I always wanted a GRS graver... Thanks for reminding why!
If you ever carve another one... Please make a WIP out of it for us. I for one would like to see the process.
Again, Nice work!
Rick
Looks good. Something to aspire to for me that is.
Great looking knife. How long did it take you to do the engraving?

Thank You,
It took me about 45 hours to engrave the guard, but it was my first try at deep relief so there is a few things I would do different next time. I spent a lot of time making different shaped gravers and scrapers.
Normaly engraving with stipled removed background takes about 5 hours per sq. inch. Deep relief should be about 15 to 20 per sq. inch.
Wow, 45 hours! I'll stop complaining when it takes me a whole day to polish a blade <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//laugh.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Great looking knife, love the damascus. -Justin
Super looking knife. I love how the pattern in the blade is almost the same as your engraving. I think my GRS engraver system was some of the best money I have spent on tools yet. Did you go to the classes at GRS and when? Who was your instructor? I have not tackled deep relief yet. I have done some waterfowl and turkeys on blades, but that is pretty amazing. People don't realize how long it takes to make a knife by hand forging it, let alone doing engraving even with a GRS system.

David, I took the beginning engraving class and then the engraving for knifemakers class back to back in June and July 2009 with Steve Dunn. He makes it look so easy to do watching him cut a scroll. Dan, I would recommend anyone that is thinking about going, to go to one of Steves classes, he talks about knife making too. I picked up some tips from him during that time. All of the other instructors are great or they wouldn't be there, but since Steve is a Master Bladesmith, he understands the issues with engraving on knives more than someone that doesn't.
