I drew some inspiration for this piece from John Doyle's fantastic guardless pieces. It's my Damascus of 1084 and 15N20 in a twisted W's pattern. The collars/ferrule is twisted wrought iron with a coined 416 spacer.

Nice Damascus pattern. I've been thinking of twisting W pattern myself. Tell me more about the billet before the twist. How many times did you cut and stack? The spacers don't have much pattern to them and probably could have been made from straight twist for a more dramatic look. The fit and finish looks pretty clean, and the coining looks even. I have to ask though, it looks like the bottom of the ricasso is a little proud against the first spacer. Or maybe the front edge of the spacer is slightly rounded. Maybe it's just the angle or lighting in the photo.

What grit is the final sand on the handle?

Joshua, I started this billet, my first, back in March. I don't have the set up for making Damascus at my shop so I was working at someone's shop that is. If I recall correctly the billet is 15X42.

The spacers have exactly the look I was shooting for, better than expected really. I think the twist pattern in good wrought iron doesn't get much prettier. I could have gone with Damascus but that didn't fit the original plan, which included bog oak in place of the Koa. I made a mistake and the bog oak didn't make it through.

The image may make the ricasso appear proud but it isn't. I plan to make the spacers proud on the next one to leave room to bull nose or chamfer the leading face, the 90 degree is not as comfortable or gentle on the sheath. It's all a learning process.

The handle was worked up through the grits to 2000 and hand polished with a brown paper sack, yup it really does work.

Thank you for the reply.

Chris

Thanks for the clarification. Good looking knife. Will it be in KC?
