Since Bill Moran introduced Damascus steel to the knife world in 1973 at The Guild Show in Kansas City, I thought what better tribute than to try to recreate one of his knives for this year's ICCE Show there. After a recent article in "Blade", I knew which knife that I wanted to recreate:
After some research, I found that Moran's favorite combination of steels was W2 & A36 which I used for this one.
According to my resources, his favorite layer count was 536:
I'm not sure if this is what Bill used to color his curly maple handle but I chose to use Aqua Fortis Reagent as it is a traditional stain:
I've yet to complete the filework on the guard and to polish the handle fittings but this will give you an idea of where I'm at so far:
Blade: W2 & A36 ; Handle: Curly Maple; Fittings: Nickel Silver; Inlay: Fine Silver
I'll try to post a finished photo when done.

Very well done Gary!
I think you've captured the Moran look with this knife Gary. It's an exceptional example of the Moran style knife. I also appreciate your depth of research and commitment to accuracy. Very good job my friend.
Thank you, everyone.
I always love to see your work Gary, that's a great looking knife beautifully made.
