That really nice sheath tooling thread by Tomas Bennett got me thinking, that I really needed to use that quilted pattern for a sheath. Being that I happen to have a few new knives needing sheaths, I figured I'd make one of those Loop Sheaths (AKA Mexican Loop).

Let me know what you think.

Sweet-looking leather work, Joshua. Thanks again to Tomas. My sheaths, too, are much improved as I follow Tomas' instructions
I used to do a lot of leather work, and some tooling long ago. I just haven't really taken the time to get back into shape.

Good morning Gentlemen. Im glad to hear that the tutorial benefited you.
Joshua. Sheath looks really good, great effort!! I have a couple ideas for you that will up your game.
You will get more detail out of your stamping if you properly "Case" the leather. You can google search that word to get detail on the process. Ultimately, you wet the leather and then let the surface dry back out. I can tell by looking at your photos..your leather was wet enough, but you did not allow it enough time to dry. This is extremely common. Going the other way not enough moisture in the leather allows the great detail but you wont be able to get the depth out of your tooling. This is due to the fact that the core of the leather is not wet, hence it can not be compressed.
Second..on the mouth of the sheath..see the gap between the sheath and guard? if you cut the sheath to fit the shape of the guard, it will close that gap, and really improve the overall look. I'll throw a couple pictures up here of an example of what I am talking about.
You will notice the detail in each stamp impression...that is due to the leather being properly cased....give your next one more time...it will return to uts original dry color, but feel cool to the touch due to the evaporative action of the water off of the top of the leather. then pound it <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
Hope these ideas help you, keep posting!! Great JOB!!
