I wanted to get some discussion started in the Sheath department, so here are a few sheaths I completed recently:

So far, I have made more of this style sheath than any other. What style sheaths do you most often make or employ for your knives? Do you make your own? Any thoughts on construction techniques you prefer? Would you like to see more sheath making videos on the ABS channel?

Good looking sheaths Ed. I do like the pouch sheaths for hunters.

You did it now, Ed.

On top of all your other duties in this life you're going to have to do a WIP on one of these. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//tongue.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Thanks guys! Great idea Karl! I'll be making a sheath real soon and I'll do a WIP on that one...

Ed, those are very well crafted. 70% of the leather sheaths I make are pouch sheaths, 20% are pancakes, the remainder are 3 part stitched on both edges. They are a mix between plain and tooled borders. I have a small 130 piece Midas stamping set so I have a wide variety of borders. I've just started leather carving. Hopefully in a few months when I get better at it I will carve different wildlife figures on my larger sheaths.

I look forward to seek your WIP. Thank you for sharing!

Watch out Ed, you may not have time to make knives with those fancy sheaths! You may be in the sheath making business.

Very nice!

That first one is the real star to my eye but they are all very nice, Ed.

Great looking sheaths Ed! I have had problems with the stamp pattern washing out when I fold the pouch over so I started making more sheaths like this. Not really sure the proper name for this type but I like them.

Very nice, Barry. Yes, when you stretch the leather, the tooling is affected. If you look at the sheaths I pictured, you can see on a few that they are not tooled where they fold over. I am working on a WIP on this style sheath and should have it ready soon...

OK, Ed. This was just a big tease? Great looking sheaths, promise of a WIP, and then.......

Did I miss it?

Hi Joshua,

No, not a big tease, just a slow WIP production! I apologize for the extended wait, but I have alot of "irons in the fire" currently <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> I am working on it, and will make it worth the wait!

Very nice work ! Yes, a WIP would be great for those of us who are trying to improve or learn to make a decent sheath. Do you have photos of the back of your sheaths ? I would like to get an idea of what those pouch sheaths look like on the back.

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks very much! I will be sure to include the back side construction in the WIP.
