Book: Damascus Steel by Manfred Sachse
The book "Damascus Steel: Myth, History, Technology, Applications" by Manfred Sachse is 304 pages and is an outstanding book on Damascus Steel. The book contains the long and very interesting history of the development of Damascus steel. It also contains a large number of photos of historic Damascus steel knives and diagrams that illustrate the process. This book is highly recommended by Master Smith Raymond Rybar.
The original book was written in German so the task was to find the book available in a published English version. The book can be very difficult to locate but a through search of the internet located the book for sale at the Association for Iron and Steel Technology in Warrendale, Pa. in their "Steel Library' at Damascus Steel by Manfred Sachse. The price is $147.00 for non association members and was shipped to me immediately. I received my copy of the book in just a few days and have hardly put it down since receiving it. This is an outstanding book on Damascus steel.

Dan,
I've seen an older copy of the english version ISBN-10: 3514005222 (none available in the book search I did with that ISBN). In the older book, pg. 102, "A ceremonial knife... or wedong... from Java... Blade of black swirl pamor... not dissimilar to ladder damask." You have any idea how that pattern is done. I've guessed at criss-cross stock-removal laddering but, to tell the truth, I don't think I'm right.
