Thinking of trying some forging some San Mai in a week or two for fun. It looks like a good introduction into pattern welding before i attempt to get into folded pattern welding. I have seen a couple youtube videos but they aren't in english.

So i'm looking for some instructional information. Albeit videos, books, cocktail napkins... I seriously love the look of it.

Thanks guys!

Ask and you shall recieve -- and it is not even in the cocktail napkin form <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />. There are some pretty good resources right here on the forums. See these threads:

San mai link 2

These threads are about stainless steel and high carbon San Mai. Is this what you were talking about?

Read through the above threads and come back with any other questions that come up. The 2 critical things with the stainless san mai is that you heve to dry weld it and make sure you keep the air out and to not spend too much time forging the billet. Carbon diffusion will occur rapidly when you are at welding temperature so what you start with is not what you end up with. You will have to play around with your heat treat because of this.

The above links cover this topic pretty well, but I am sure you will have questions, so be sure to ask.

Thanks! i'm not exactly positive what "San Mai" actually means. I saw a quick video where a guy used 5160 | 1095 | 5160... i'm not up to working with stainless because i'm still tackling standard carbon steels.
