Here is as good of a close up as my camera will allow on a piece that I have a question on. I made a typical 240 layer billet then cut & stacked it like a "W". My question is why are the layers in places like a 600 layer billet (or higher)and some remain like a 240 layer when I did it all with my press & flat dies. I would think that the layers would stay constant this way.

I would appreciate your insight.

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary, 1st of all that is a really nice piece of damascus! To get the pattern from the end of the bar did you accordion it or tile it, as this makes a big difference in appearance. also sometimes with w's I get more surface compression leaving the outer sides really compressed and the centers relatively loose making the outer surfaces look like a much higher layer count than the rest, I cant tell from the photo but but it seems somewhat similar to the effect I sometimes get with w's. I tiled the piece. I guess that I simply got alot more compression on parts of the stack. Thaks.
