Here is a small forging project you can do in a short period of time and be done. This is an Herb Chopper. I used 1084 steel right off the end of a 1/4 X 1 inch bar.

I will show pictures of the easy steps.

First, step down about 1-1/4 inch to get the tail started. It has to be very hot, about yellow.

Draw out the tail at about the same yellow heat being careful not to over heat it.

Continue to draw the tail out to a smooth taper and then round it paying particular attention to the underside since that will be on top later.

Next, cut it off the bar about 3 inches from the tail step. Using tongs Grab it by the tail and forge the edge bevel and lengthen the blade a little till you are happy with. Get this step finished before you curl the tail over. Now, put the small curl on the end and heat the tail base pretty hot. Now quickly curl it back over the top and get it the way you want it. Straighten and thermo cycle.

Now you heat treat accordingly and finish the edge and sharpen it.

This is so simple and easy to make. It can be scaled up or stretched out to suit you. They make great gifts and auction items.
