Forging a Polled Tomahawk

Butch Sheely, Journeyman Smith, wrote an excellent article entitled "Forging a Polled Tomahawk" that appeared in the "American Bladesmith" which is the Journal of the American Bladesmith Society and was published in the Spring 2010 issue. The article describes the materials needed and step by step instructions that include diagrams.

A PDF copy of the article can be dowloaded by clicking: "Forging a Polled Tomahawk by Butch Sheely".

Thanks for posting this Dan! I haven't made a tomahawk yet. I can't wait to try it out.

Make sure that Butch knows his contribution is appreciated if he's not on the forum very often.

Butch is an excellent hawk maker and this is a great article.

I highly suggest going to the Mid-America Bladesmithing Symposium held in Troy Ohio usually at the end of August. Butch often demonstrates his hawk making skills there. Butch makes many styles of hawks and watching him make a hawk from a strap of steel, wrapping it around a drift, welding together and welding in a bit is just shy of magical. I have learned a lot by just watching Butch's techniques when doing demos like this.
