My name is William Mabe. I am a 50 year old husband and father of two living in the countryside of North Carolina. My family and I immigrated here from South Africa 8 years ago. My background has been mainly in architecture and marine electrical.
I finally took the plunge and signed up with the ABS this past weekend at the Blade Show. I did do a little research some time ago but it was really after a short chat with Mr Ed Caffrey at the show that I was certain that this is the right direction to go. Thank you again for your time and genuine conversation Mr Caffrey! I did also speak with a number of new journeyman smiths who had been accredited with their stamps at the show. All were helpful and a really nice group of people.
It has been nearly a year of planning, researching, saving and spending out on tooling but I finally completed building my knife workshop last week. With allot of excitement, a little trepidation and anxiety the personal realization that the journey to becoming a full time knife maker has just begun. I will be doing everything myself including heat treatment and leather work. Steels - mainly 1095, 5160, W2, A2 and CPM 154 CM using both forged and stock removal techniques.
I am using a 3 burner Majestic Forge and 100 lb Emerson traditional anvil. It is my intention to attend the basic blade smithing class as soon as possible. For now I am really looking forward to just hammering out a few blades.
I am sure that other members will be supportive along the way and I am looking forward to becoming more active with the Society. Everyone I have been in contact with has been very helpful and I hope to be as well.
Welcome William. It is good to see you in the ABS and here on the forum. Let us know what we can do to help.

Thank you Sir.
Welcome william.
The ABS is a wonderful group offering support that you cannot find anywhere else.
I attended the Bill Moran ABS school in Washington Arkansas this Spring , The school and instructors are exceptionally good.
You cannot go wrong attending a school. Allso do not forget about the Hammer-In's. They are a must as well.
Good Luck.

Thank you for your welcome and reassurance Anthony. I would like to attend some hammer-in's some time when the venue is a little closer to me.
