Hello to all. I am Nicholas Kimball, a professional blacksmith in Virginia. I have been working as a full-time blacksmith for over 5 years now and specialize in historical restoration. Before starting in this profession my passion was for blades. It was time to get back to something I love.

Welcome Nicholas. I look forward to seeing your work.

I'd be interested in hearing more about your background. I also serve as a blacksmith specializing in historic tool making as well as fixtures and hardware. This type of blacksmithing has helped my knife making greatly. Anything thoughts you'd care to share about the correlation between the blacksmithing and bladesmithing could be real interesting to me.

Thank you for the welcoming words. Lin, I'm glad to see someone else with a background in history, though there was little doubt I would. This kind of work really helps one to truly appreciate how we have grown as a people, culture and our tools.

I have performed blacksmithing demos and restoration work for a few different historic sites in various states. Most notable would be George Washington's home Mount Vernon. I work as the full time lead Smith at this site under our Master Smith Eric Zieg. When I first started working with knives (nearly 20 years ago), I did mostly stock removal. When I transitioned into blacksmithing I learned about the malleable nature of hot metal and how it flows. People have often been amazed at what a hammer is capable of creating that others need expensive and specialized machines for. I will post pictures of my work at some point but currently I don't really have any. Nearly all of my work goes out the door nearly as soon as I make it and it just doesn't occure to me to take pictures before it's gone. I'll appoint my wife to nag me more on that subject and see if we can't remedy this problem.

Nicholas,

Welcome to the ABS and The ABS Forum!!

It's great to have another working blacksmith on the Forum. The experience and knowledge acquired from general blacksmithing is very valuable for a knifemaker. Looking forward to seeing some of your work.
