Hello to everyone in ABS. I'm Elden Cheatham and I may be one of the newest members. I live in the Oklahoma City metro area For the past 11 years, I've been the Safety Officer on a federal disaster medical response team, and the Safety Officer for the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps. I've been deployed to locations all over these United States and seen things you can't begin to imagine. I love knives and the idea of making knives. I find it so enjoyable and so relaxing; it takes my mind off things. I am brand spankin' new Haven't made knife #1 yet. I do take blanks from a supplier, make handles, assemble and finish. That isn't bladesmithing. I'm eager to learn and I plan on being an asset to ABS and the profession. One of these days I hope to have you thinking to yourself "I knew him when he was just a pup, but look at him now!"
Welcome Aboard Elden,
You'll find everyone eager to assist you on your journey. I would encourage you to attend hammer-in's, and highly recommend the 2 week Introduction to Bladesmithing School. The school will cut years of trial and error off the learning curve!

Welcome Elden. Good to have you here in the ABS and on the forum. Any questions we will try our best to answer. I am just down the road from you in Norman.
Welcome again.

Thank you Robert, I'm signed up for the school in September and am really looking forward to it. What is a hammer in, I keep seeing them listed here and there. Thanks.
Eldon,
Welcome to the ABS and the ABS Forum!
"Hammer-in", is a generic name that we use for knifemaking seminars that run through a weekend. Some of the hammer-ins are two day events (Sat. and Sun.)and some are three days (Fri. thru Sun.)
The ABS has a number of these events around the country. You can find them listed on this Forum, as well as the ABS web site.
The Heartland Bladesmithing Symposium is held in Topeka, KS. It is typically scheduled for the first full weekend in October. The next one is scheduled for October 5th & 6th, 2014.
Elden,
Welcome to the ABS. I am a pretty new member myself. If you can, do yourself a favor and take the Intro to Bladesmithing class. I am on day 6 of this 10 day course right now. Well worth every cent, and your time. Great way to get started if your time and budget allows for it.
Look forward to seeing some of your knives in the future. Everyone starts somewhere.
