I've seen it for sale and read just a couple of places where bladesmiths have mentioned using it (in some damascus). That being said, I don't really understand how it's being used and was hoping for some clarification. If it's 1084 powdered steel, does it have all the same properties as bar stock, just ground up into powder? I'm guessing there's some kind of applications where using powder is better than bar stock? Any help to ease my ignorance would be appreciated .

Jeremy, powdered steel is mostly used to make mosaic damascus. When I took the advanced damascus class, with Tim Foster, we did some mosaic with powdered steel. I've used it, in my shop, a little, but I'm not good at explaining things in print. I'm sure someone else can explain the process better than I can. As far as heat treat, I used the same method I use for bar stock.

Jeremy,
Dale is right. It is for mosaic damascus. I don't think it is better than bar but it's the fact you can do different things with it. The best info is on 2 great DVD's one by MS JW Randall and one by MS Ed Caffrey. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. So, I'm assuming the powder is put into some type of cannister then along with the other steels? I suppose that makes sense for filling different gaps and making very different patterns possible? I'll look up Ed sometime for the specifics-thanks again.

Who do yall buy the powdered steels from? I found one place online that sells 5lbs of 1084 powder and thats it. Just wondering if there is a good supplier with a variety of 5lbs of powdered steels out there, maybe even some powdered nickel or somethin. Thanks ahead for any info.
I know Kelly Cupples out of Yakima, Wa sells powdered steel, but I'm not sure what kinds/prices.
