I have read thru the proposed ivory ban that is now in place, but I'm still not shure if using mammoth or fossilized ivory being it mammoth, fossil walrus, warthog tusk, or hippo tooth is legal or not. So I was wondering is this a total ivory ban or just elephant ivory not over 100 years old.
Needing help making sense of this matter.
Thanks Landon
Mark had a good article on this in the last issue of "Knife". To simplify it, there are a few exceptions but new ivory is pretty well banned but the fossil ivories are legal to use.

For those who are interested, this is the link to the entire text of the rule with Q&A: https://www.fws.gov/international/travel-and-trade/ivory-ban-questions-and-answers.html
Here is the link to the specific paragraph that addresses "Ivory from extinct species": https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2016/06/06/2016-13173/endangered-and-threatened-wildlife-and-plants-revision-of-the-section-4d-rule-for-the-african#p-32
However, be advised that California, New York, and New Jersey, enacted their own state laws that prohibit sale or trade of all ivory, including fossilized ivory.
Other states have similar legislation in the works.
