Well since the last query went so well, I'll ratchet up to the next question: Is there a 'best size' or best size range for steel bar stock to be used for blade making? I ask because in many professions starting with an appropriate size of raw material can make a big difference in the amount of work required to reach the final result. Until I joined the Society here, I've only ever made knives from old files and railroad spikes so I have no idea what to shop for in terms of industrial grade raw materials.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Michael,
I will asume you do not have a trip hammer to resize your stock. In this case, I would try to buy a size that will accomodate the type of knives you want to make. I make fixed blade hunting knives and Bowies so I would prefer two sizes. 1/4 X 1 bar stock and 1/4 X 1 1/2 bar stock. This is just a starting point.
Michael,
The 1st weekend I spent with the ABS 9 years ago,I was handed a piece of 1/4" x 1" 1084. I still hand that size out to guys starting out when they come to the shop. The 1/4" x 1" should give you a good feel for the way the metal move under the hammer.(Hopefully where you want it to go!). It heat treats real easy as well. Keep the blades short and practice, practice, practice. You'll do great.
