I have been looking for a place where I could get some spalted maple burl wood, antler scales, stag, and ivory scales. Just to find any of these would be great but after looking at a few places like Jantz knife supply and others I find I cant afford any. I only have about 30 dollars spending money and that is-int enough. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//sad.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> Do ant of yall know where I could get any of these items that would not be out of my budget?

Thanks,

Jonathan.

Hey Johnathan. I can't help on the stag, antler, or ivory. The prices on those materials just seem to keep going up. One site you might check out is Alpha Knife Supply. They usually have a pretty nice selection of wood. Some stabilized and some not. They also have stag, ivory, and other handle materials. Their website is:

Alpha Knife Supply

You also might check out Uncle Al and see what he has.

Uncle Al

Just go to his online catalog link on his webpage.

Good luck

By the way, does anybody know where I could get cheap sheet copper or brass.

So far my copper has just been whatever I can salvage by cutting and flattening copper pipes, and I have really thing brass for finger guards but I cant find any sheet brass.

I went to a local salvage yard but they got rid of all theirs because it cost so much they thought someone might try to steel it.

Jonathan-

You have a few options for thin sheet (I'm assuming you want thin?). If you have access to a hobby or craft store like Hobby Lobby, they carry copper sheet in small enough pieces that it'll only cost you a few bucks. Not certain, but might have brass, too? Another place to try is some metal roofing and gutter companies. Occasionally, they have people with a LOT of money want copper roofing or gutters and there's always scrap pieces you ask about. The scraps generally get recycled because of the cost of copper, but shoot 'em an offer of a couple bucks and I'll bet they'd give you some. Hope that helps.

Jonathan,

Something else that you may want to get into is cutting & drying your own burls. This can be a lengthy process but rewarding.

Then the only expense that you would have is the stabilizing once the wood is dry.
