Good morning,
I am attempting to duplicate a mud tray quench tank I saw this weekend and I'm wondering if it needs to be soldered, or if epoxy would work to seal the edges for the oil quench. It is a 14 inch stainless steel mud tray for drywall mud.
Thank you
I used Simpson SET epoxy to seal my steel quench tank. Sets in 7 minutes. This is a structural epoxy made to set steel bolts, rods, etc. into concrete.
Available at Home Depot or Lowes.

Personally, I welded up two tanks out of steel plate in order to have tanks that would hold about five gallons of oil.
The amount of oil that a mud pan will hold is not enough quenchant.
I would only use something like that for small hunters until I was able to get something more sufficient built.
And I would do it soon.

I agree with Karl, if you are going for a full blade quench. My quench tank is a 8" square steel tube about 30" tall with a welded base plate. I still used the Simpson epoxy to seal the weld from the inside and to hold a piece of plywood down to the bottom of the tank (just in case I dropped a hot knife in there).
For some strange reason I intuitively thought Anthony was going to use the drywall mud pan for edge quenching. Sort of like the Ed Caffrey method of edge quenching.

I was looking to edge quench, and also duplicate what i saw Timothy Potier do this weekend. In this case, I can make 2 tanks to accomplish whichever task I am after. My knives currently range from 5 to 11 inches in total length, but by the time I attend the Intro to Bladesmithing, I hope to be up to the 15 inch mark.
