I made a Chinese war sword- it's too big to fit into the oven though. Any thoughts/ideas/ways to temper without an oven- maybe a torch?

THanks!!- joseph

you can paint it with a torch that works I have tempered many swords this way and I built an oven due to messing up 1 out of 5 or so and needing to redo the hardening. if you do go with the torch do it at least two times clearing off the oxides between. if I remember right for 5160 I was doing a brown-to dark purple temper, 1050 was a little cooler temper. Depending on the alloy you can also ask a Pizza place to toss it in the pizza oven(most pizza ovens are 500-550 Deg F)I know of a few guys that have done this.

Great- I'll ask the pizzeria up the street. Thanks for input. Any other ways, anyone?
