Heat Treating And The Etch Effect

I have a Bowie blade of 450 layers, minus scale and grinding. I want to fully harden the blade and draw the spine for possible file work. My question is, will this have the same effect on my etch as if I had heat treated only the edge?

I want the blade to have a uniform etch.

I have to much time in this to mess it up.

Hello Russell. I am afraid it will. You can cold blue the blade after the final etch and then oil it and let it sit. Or do not clean the oxides off the blade aftet the final etch. Oil the blade and let it sit overnight. This kind of sets the oxide. Then you can lightly hit the tops and see what you think.
