Glossary for Bladesmiths

A Glossary of terms and definitions for bladesmiths has been written by Kevin Cashen, Master Smith and ABS Board of Directors member. I have posted it on the ABS Website homepage in the Techniques section and you can view it at, Click: Glossary.

This is the first edition of the Glossary which will be a "Work in Progress" and Kevin and other Master Smiths will being adding terms and definitions over time.

<img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//biggrin.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> That is actually why I like to have some sort of reference for definitions at forums where I post. It is difficult to keep technical posts under several pages if you have to define each term and concept as you go. I am used to rather dry and technical metallurgical exchanges and over-simplification of terms often puts me between a rock and a hard spot, since most people would like things in plain English but when you drop the $5 words you get more criticism from technically geared people who want to correct you for not being more precise and accurate. The best solution I have found is to aim down the middle and give a source for folks to learn the "geek speak" at their leisure.

What you folks can do is ask plenty of good questions to let us know what needs to be added to the list or just ask for a specific definition to be included. This glossary has plenty of metallurgical definitions but also includes common words to knives and bladesmithing, I look forward to it growing into one of the more comprehensive resources for our craft.

Excellent reference work Kevin and thank you for compiling it. I look forward to seeing this grow. We can have the Webster's of knifemaking.

Thanks again.

Thanks Kevin and Dan

Fantastic resource makes checking terms very easy. I cut and pasted it in a word file so that I could print it out. I still struggle to read on a computer screen, if I have to juggle two pages, things go downhill fast. Thanks again for all the effort.

Cheers Shawn
