I've seen what is used by some to inhibit scale during thermal cycling and heat treating by searching some of the other forums.

Please share any successful methods and supplies used to minimize or prevent scale from forming during the final thermal cycling and heat treatment process of 1084FG, 1095FG, and 5160 steel.

I am using an electric PID controlled oven, but all methods including using the forge as the heat source would be helpful. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//wink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

I've had very good success using ATP-641. This is a liquid anti-scale coating from Brownell's.

Gary,

Do you follow the directions exactly or have you learned a trick or two on how to apply it?

Application is pretty straight forward. Paint an even coat on blade & let air dry before placing in oven. It will pop loose with the quench.
