Whatever the thickness of the tang then the same amount should stick out the pommel.

Relieve the hole whether it is just the wood end of the handle or a metal pommel cap.

The peened material has to have a place to spread to capture the handle or Pommel cap.

If not the handle will crack.

The tang end needs to be annealed.

Lock everything in the vice, protecting the handle stock.

Use a polished ball peen hammer peen the tang down.

Be gentle and go slow.

You an also make a peen block that fits the end of the tang and goes over the Pommel.

It is also relieved to give space for the material to spread into as you peen.

Kevin,

At what stage in the blade making process are you? Forged? Heat treated? etc.

Im almost ready for heat treating, however i do plan on buring on my handle before i heat treat to lessen the chance of my tang breaking.

Kevin, I will give you some good advice before I go further. I want you to order the book

Handles and Guards" by Joe Keeslar. You can find it in the ABS store on this very website. That book will cover a lot of the questions you seem to be asking.

Of course I and others are willing to help. I have to say this though: Although you have asked a question or two, you have hinted that you already have plans made just after saying you have no clue. That confuses me as to just what kind of help you need.
