Oops!

Forgot this was a late add on to an earlier topic.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge too, Karl! I've been using the alignment pins in the guards, and man do they help!

Thanks!

Bob

Thank you guys for your work on the tutorials. They are great.

I might mention this pictorial I did a while ago that shows the basics for drilling the step bolts some of us use. Click the "My link" above and scroll to page 15 to get right to the bolts.

Great tutorial Lin. That should be standard material for the handles and guards class. I do basically the same method.

Hi folks- <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

This is late... <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//huh.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Steve messaged me quite awhile back about this thread and I told him I wanted to do a video about domed pins.

It took awhile for me to fit it into the shop time schedule... and it took 4 videos to get it done. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//blink.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> LOL

Hopefully this stuff can help some newer makers out. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Thanks, Nick... for both doing it and the attention to detail... it's a wonderful, clear picture.

Here are a few photos of a really simple fixture I use for drilling handles. If your ricasso has flat/parallel sides, then this will hold the knife square/perpendicular to your drill press spindle no matter how the handle is shaped.

Where it really comes in handy is for tapered full tangs, or odd shaped handle materials like stag and ivory. <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Dirt simple to make, but it is sure nice to have. There's a little support to tuck under the far end of the handle to keep it from flexing down with the drilling pressure.

Here it is, set and ready to drill--- <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Good stuff guys!!! Nick; your fixture and mine are a lot alike. I do my drilling on the 95% finished handle tho; but you are right about it keeping things in line and square to the world.

Nick,

Thanks for the awesome video tutorial!!! That was more than I expected! Thanks too for posting the photos of your drilling fixture.

Another thanks to Lin for posting the link to his handle tutorial!

All of these Topic of the Month threads can be added to. Don't hesitate to post up your methods on any of them!

Nick generously agreed to allow us to upload his videos on How to Make Domed and Polished Handle Pins to the ABS YouTube Channel. I combined the original four (4) videos into two (2) videos which are now Part 1of 2 and Part 2 of 2. I added captions, close ups of his work (Ken Burns effect), and transitions. Anyway, we thank Nick who is an outstanding instructor and know that these videos will be very popular on the ABS YouTube Channel.
