So here are the results of my handle making demo from Saturday 1/16. There are two pieces for a BBQ set (Steak Flipper and Fork, Spatula coming soon) and two pieces for a fireplace set (Shovel and Poker, brush coming soon). I demonstrated partial tangs in a solid block of maple (burned in tang) for the BBQ set with domed pins and a frame handle with cocobolo scales and stainless frame and flush pins for the FP tools. The BBQ set has all 416 SS hardware, the Fireplace set has 416 SS guard and frame with a brass spacer. It was quite a challenge to get everything done in the time allotted, but I covered it all and got a great response from the audience.

Here are the BBQ pieces:

Thanks guys. My wife did most of the forging on the tools.

I went to Joshua's handle class it was really educational watching him work and entertaining. He did a great job of explaining how he was doing things and sometimes alternative ways of doing the same things. I particularly liked his layout work. I thought it was pretty amazing how much work he got done in a day especially using basic equipment. Thanks for the class Josh and thanks for making me feel slow (Knifemaking slow).

Thanks Gilbert, I'm glad you enjoyed it and even happier that you thought it was educational!

I know I worked pretty fast during the demo, but that was much faster than I normally work. Which is why there are a few not-so-good spots on the pieces. I was mostly demonstrating basic techniques and not refined ones. If you take more time with this stuff, it will come out really nice. The work you are already doing is really nice too. Did you put a photo up of the W-2 blade with the Hamon you showed me yet?
