hello friends well I am here with yet another question for you. for my first knife I am going to forge a drop point hunter but I did not want to do a guard I wanted to do bolsters, so my question is this what can be used for bolster material that can be readily purchased at big box stores like home depot, lowes, tractor supply etc? also the file I am going to use Is an original black diamond brand file.

Why don't you make it without bolsters and concentrate on getting your scales nice and evenly ground and polished on the front before glue up. If it is your first knife ever that will be harder than you might think. Or you could use two different kinds of wood with a spacer. Or and I have never done this but it looks good is to turn the wood so the grain runs the up and down direction and some that runs horizontal with a spacer. That would also work. Try piecing them together on an angle. You can do this on a any machine that has an adjustable grinding shelf. How about some pictures when you get done...good or bad. If these guy's see it they can help fix whatever goes wrong or let you know where to go next. Good luck.

Just remember take your time with the hammer and it will save you time at the grinder. This is something I had to learn the hard way. And knock off most if not all of the file groves before you start forging. I wouldn't want you to get a cold shut on your first one.

On my first bolstered knife I used brass from Ace Hardware. I now use 416 stainless steel that Bruce Bump, MS turned me on to. You could make the next set bolsters out of black linen micarta with carbon fiber pins. Looks real nice.

Dan, Jantz Supply and Aldo have 416 barstock. Not super cheap at $24-$28 for 12 inch, 3/8×1". But you can get four or five hunter guards out of 12".

Dan,

Here are some suppliers that I have bought stainless from. 416 and 410 are nearly the same thing and are both used for knife fittings.

Dan,

Sorry about the late answer. I have had some family members with health issues this summer. Mom had another bout with cancer and just got out of the hospital.

I get my 416 from Tracey at USA Knifemaker's Supply. Mainly because it is clean and has proven to work very well.

Also I have gotten some from Ann at Sheffields, it was covered with scale and has to be cleaned. The price is close enough to warrant buying the cleaner stuff. Tracey also has rods for pins.

Regards,

George
