I am wanting to take on the challenge of one of these pieces. I have had trouble finding any refrences on them, as far as blade width, lenth, over all lenth, quillon width, ect. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Landon

I applaud you wanting to take on this type of project Landon. A lot of pieces involved. It will test you and your patience, but they sure look good when they are done. There are a number of pictures available on google. One good resource for me was Stones ( Glossary of the Construction, Decoration, and use of Arms and Armour). Very good book covering tons of things including main gauche. It is available through Amazon. You might be able to find the first edition which is hardbound. Also check out some of the arms and armour auction sites. You really need to hold one, so a trip to a place that sells fencing equipment, rapiers, etc. might be in order. Give me a call or e-mail if you need more.

Thank you Brion, I will see if i can find the book. I have looked at several photos of them from time to time but just cant figure the diminsions from photos. I have always liked the looks of them and other daggers since I was verry young. Last year I was fortunite enough to hold the one you had made. This is by no means my next project but just wanting to do my home work, for when I do take on the challenge.

Here is what I came up with Landon. It is a mix of different styles from the 1700's.I believe the blade was close to 13" with the handle being just under five. I kind of winged it and used a main gauche blade someone gave me as a starting point.

The book "Swords and Hilt Weapons" is another good reference. There is at least one main gauche pictured. Lots of sword and dagger hilts.
