I have some bad news about ABS member Zoe Crist
Zoe was working in his shop the other day making Damascus and somehow he got his hand caught in the rollers of his rolling mill. He lost 3 of his fingers to the first knuckle on his right hand. His wife said he put a tourniquet on his arm and drove himself to the local hospital where he was life flighted to a hospital in VA where they tried to reattach his fingers but could not because there was too much damage. he is at home now and in a lot of pain but on meds to keep him as comfortable as possible.
i have 2 knives i am willing to donate for a auction to help his family out
also you can send donations from Paypal to [email protected]
keep an eye on this thread as the situation develops
thank you

I appreciated your telephone call this morning and this post to let everyone know about this tragic accident. I just sent an email to the ABS Board of Directors informing them of the situation.

I'm so sorry to hear this.
The good news is that Zoe is back home and in good spirits. He said while he was in some pain, he was recovering and only expected this to be a short set back. Zoe is a good guy and a hard worker. If anyone can shake this kind of accident, he is the man.
This has been a wake up call for me. As Bladesmiths, we all work with dangerous equipment. And accidents happen in a hurry!! I, for one, am going to be more safety aware in the shop!!
Amen to that Bill. I am glad to hear he is in good spirits and recovering. Definitely keep safe in the shops.

ok looks like im going to be heading this thing up, so as it stands im going to get in touch with everyone that's commented about donating a knife
i will create a special page on facebook where we can do this, i will make all the donators admins on the page so they can be involved with the sales of the knives or items. Buyers will have to join the page and we will run the auction in the comments of the photograph of the knife. When bidding is done the winning bidder will send the money directly to Zoe. The maker will send the knife to the winning bidder when we have confirmation of transfer of funds
so if you could get me a good pic of the knife so i can run it in a thread and also a link to your web page and Email
when i get conformation from the donators i will have a complete list of knives and makers
here is my email
so you guys that are members of the CKCA put the word out
when i get the page up and running i will post a link to it on here bladeforums and also jerzeedevel along with knifeforums
thanks
Lon

Hey everybody. I wanted to get on here and just thank everyone for your support. It means the world to me. Never thought I'd be the one to say that good wishes and prayers, and positive thinking was enough to get you by, but it is. It has been my lifeline these last few days and keeps me positive and motivated to overcome this setback and get back in the shop. going to figure out new ways to hold things and do things, but it could have been a lot worse and I am glad the events went the way they did. leaving me with what i have left and my life, to be here with my wife and two boys. We just came home from our first post-op appointment and my hand is healing well, no sign of infection or anything. My first finger is about an inch long, my middle an inch and quarter and the third an inch and a half. They look pretty beat up, with lots of stitches holding it all together, but hopefully they fill out into plump little stubs. They look kinda like little peeled bananas that have been stitched back closed. lol <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//smile.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> so, they'll be some time for recovery, but nothing will keep me outta my shop! my wife and I will be working a lot together in the shop. Sounds fun and exciting. This was an accident, but not a careless accident and just really hits home how dangerous these tools can be, and to be constantly reevaluating safety protocols for your shop and never relaxing around equipment even if you feel comfortable with it. Never. never. So, once again, i just want to thank everyone for their support. I knew the ABS and fellow knifemakers were people i liked and enjoyed being around. but now it is way beyond that. it is an honor for me to be involved with all of you. thank you. thank you. thank you. Zoe
Glad to hear from you here Zoe, I know everybody's been anxious to hear how you're doing, and I know we're all glad to see you keeping a positive outlook. It's definitely an unfortunate set-back, fortunately however, it wasn't a showstopper.
I think we'll all be a little more cautious around these big "toys" of ours, any one of which could probably kill us if we're not. Sorry you had to be the guy that opened our eyes, but thanks for keeping it real.
I'll come up and see you again soon brother, give Shio and the kids our love.
Zoe
Good to hear from you. I wish you the best in your recovery.
