That is a piece of acetate film (similar to clear transparency sheets). It is roughly .005 inches thick and helps to prevent the peening tools from denting the handle scales. I punch a hole in the acetate with my rotary leather punch tool that matches the diameter (or a tiny bit bigger) of the pin. Then I tape it down when peening the pins over.

Here are a couple things I'm working on I forged out this hunter this weekend (rough ground) it was my first attempt at a multi bar twist pattern. It was supposed to be a Bowie knife but as they say there is a paring knife in every Bowie so I guess i'm happy I salvaged a hunter from it. Next is the thickest Bowie I've made yet .259 and 10 inches long it really didn't feel as heavy as I thought with a full flat grind, it's going to get a fighter style frame handle with Rams horn, I haven't worked with horn yet. Although the multi bar didn't turn out the way I wanted i'm looking forward to trying again.

That is a really nice Harmon on that Bowie Gilbert. It’s difficult to see the pattern on the hunter on my phone. I’ll have to check it again at home

Josh the Bowie is a-203e, nickel shim and 52100 core. The Hunter is 3- 40 layer bars with the center 5 thicker I was going for Merovingian which I will try again.

Made some progress on the Bowie knife last week and over the weekend. It's been over 2 years since I made one of these it's going pretty slow . Well here it is with the rams horn, frame and bronze liners. Next is file work. First time working with horn I see what people mean about the odor.

Looking good Gilbert. Remember to wear the respirator when sanding that horn! Going slowly is OK. No, not just OK, it's a really good idea!

Jason thank you, your Bowie/ Fighter came out great. Josh thank you I'm wearing my dust mask and using fresh paper and belts I'd hate to risk overheating at this point. I realized how bad it was going to smell while trimming it up on the bandsaw.
