What is the story behind the tomb knife? I hear that title and see it a lot. Where did it originate? Why was it origionally created and what purpose does it serve. I'm aware it is a great honor to be selected to make one...just wondering out loud.

My understanding is; each year the American Bladesmith Society has provided TOMB the opportunity to auction a knife to raise monies for the organization. TOMB is a fellowship organization that raises money to support the ABS Schools. The TOMB Knife is auctioned to that end. It's a great honor to be asked to create it.

I too had wondered about it and have come to this conclusion after a bit of research. JMHO

The Order of the Mystic Brotherhood was founded in 1988 as a support group for the ABS.  It is a non-profit fraternal organization to which a person must be invited to become a member after having been nominated by a member and having passed an election of the total membership.  The organization has purchased equipment for the ABS, given scholarships to attend the Moran School, assisted bladesmiths who have been injured and cannot work or are otherwise having a rough time.  The group seeks no credit for anything it does and for the most part attempts to escape pubicity.  At the present, there are approxiately 50 members.  The sole criteria for being offered membership is the individual's contributions to bladesmithing performed without any expectation of receiving any type of reward for these services, and performed over a period of time.

Hope this explains things a bit.
