I have a question about knife shows and it may be an ethical one, or it may just be about good form or being considerate.
Is it acceptable to have a knife on your table with a "SOLD" sign on it when the show opens? Do makers bring knifes to shows that are already sold?

I frequently do.
I made about 8 knives for the Blade Show this June. During the days just before the show, I had customers asking me to show them what I was working on.
Three of the knives sold before I left for Atlanta.
But I had every intention of showing folks in Atlanta those knives - and I did.

Sure; active buyers will sometimes look you up the day/night before the show opens. He buys; you sell. It's on the table with a sold sign, next years serious guys that like that knife will be hustling too.
The main reason for shows; I think; is selling next years knives.
One guys opinion.

Thanks guys.
I think that's the first time I can remember when 3 smiths all gave the same answer to a question!

How about four Joshua. I normally have knives for delivery at shows and put them on the table as sold until picked up. Like Mike states, selling pieces for next years show or future orders. Potential customers can see your work in person and get interested. That being said, it is good to have some pieces available for walk up sales. See you in Kansas City.
