Photo Gallery Tips and Internet Search Engine Optimization
I have some tips to help ABS members get more exposure for their work on the internet because there is so much more that you can do than simply uploading your photos to the Gallery attached to the ABS Forum. As of today, November 21, 2012, there have been more than 400,000 views of the photos in the ABS Gallery around the world in more than 100 countries.
After uploading photos of your knives to your album in the "Member's Work Gallery" there are several additional steps to take if you want to make your work and your name discoverable to the internet search engines. Google, MSN,Yahoo and the other internet search engines will index on the caption or title line of the photos in our ABS Gallery so it is important to have your name in the caption of your photos in the Member's Work Gallery.
There is also an opportunity for you to write a detailed description of your knife and the materials used in the space below the caption. Another idea is for you to include a link to your website and/or email address after a quote such as: " For more information please contact..." You can also insert a link to a YouTube video about your knife that you have on your YouTube or other video Channel.
The examples in the screen captures below show some tips to get your photos in the search engine page rankings and maximize exposure to your work on the internet:

Dan, thank you for this reminder. We ourselves are responsible for promoting our work. This feature enables us to maximize our exposure to the search engines and possible buyers. Thank you for that.
Guys, we should take the time to edit our photos to reflect this. There is no need to change it in your files. Just post the photo and immediately make the change to simplify the title of the photo and include your name and remove the clutter such as numbers, etc.
Right now we're getting lots of photos with numeric titles that really dont help the search engines. We have new membership that have yet to be aware of this so that is understandable. Some dont yet have a website and this is a wonderful chance to let he ABS site work for us.
Whats a good way (program) to get pics small enough (both in file and pixel size) for the members gallery? I use Flickr to resize, but it jumps from 500 pixel way down to 320. This also doesn't get the file size down under 50kb on my pics.
Hey Matt,
There is a thread on this forum about image editing software. Image Re-sizing Software
Also, I have written a tutorial about editing images for the internet. Editing Photos for the Internet
thanks Steve, will check them out, must have looked past them when searching.
Here is one I use. It took me a few tries but I figured it out. The pictures look essentially the same but it gets the size down to where the site can manage it.
I'm bringing this to the top because, as of yet, so many are not editing their photo names in the above gallery.
Move your cursor over any of the photos and see what pops up. This pop up should have your name in it. Changing the file name after you load it onto the gallery only changes it for the gallery. Your original file has the same name/number designation as you originally named it.
This is not a forum rule, but it is to allow internet search engines to find it and give you the exposure that you deserve.
Thanks Lin! I just changed one of my images and reloaded it...it worked great and is much more professional <img src=' http://www.americanbladesmith.com/ipboard/public/style_emoticons//cool.gi f' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />
Good job Ed! I looked up top and saw that. Nice skinner.
Dan showed this feature to me months ago and I have really been trying to share it. It is a small part of promoting your work and directing attention to your photos.
